I dreamed this living boat woman, and on a trip to Big Cypress, I knew just how to use her. I put my granddaughter Nola in the boat and had her floating through the cypress swamp. There's great love and tenderness toward the fishes, and the birds are raising their young, but there are dangers as well. It's a piece of how we thread that path between beauty and danger to teach both love and respect, and safety and power to our young. We all depend on the mother ship to survive.
