Lord God Bird

Ivory billed woodpeckers once populated the entire southern U.S. They need old growth forests with plentiful snags to feed from as they only want big, fat grubs to eat. 19th century ornithologists helped wipe them out by paying locals to bring them dead birds to stuff for collectors. Sweet gum is their favorite nesting tree, so I placed my birds on this fabulous tree with the Suwannee River as a backdrop. Reduction linocut in 4 layers printed on etching press with Gamblin and Charbonel inks, Edition of 12 original hand-pulled prints. Sweetwater Picture Framing offers an archival fine art print of this work

Great blue herons, and many other species of water birds are common in the ditches alongside the Tamiami Trail. Done with a 4 layer reduction linocut. Sweetwater Picture Framing offers an archival fine art print of this work.

Ocean’s Protector

I saw a painting of a multi-armed mermaid in a dream. She combined aspects of Kali/Shiva with Mami Wata and other water goddesses from around the world. Water is a healing force in my dreams and in waking life for mind, body, emotions and spirit. The submerged city represents the clearing away of old forms that harm the earth by the astonishing power of water. She holds the conch, a call to action, and the trident, the power to effect change in her upper hands. Sea grasses and bivalves, the humble forces of restoration to health are held in the lower hands. Reduction linocut in 4 layers printed over beach trash collagraph on an etching press with Gamblin and Charbonel inks. Edition of 16 original hand- pulled prints. Sweetwater Picture Framing offers an archival fine art print of this work.

Octopus II

The octopus, this most sentient and alien creature, is a favorite subject for me. I once dreamed I was best friends with a huge octopus who held a trident. He would poke other humans in the butt to get them out of the water, but I was cool! I do feel somewhat responsible for insuring our waters are cared for and respected. They wear their emotions on their skin and sense with their whole bodies. I identify with that as well. This piece was created at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival as a demonstration piece in 2022. Reduction linocut in 4 layers.

Old Growth Giant

Strong and wise old growth Tulip Poplar. Linoleum Block Print on paper; printed on etching press with Gamblin oil-based ink and hand painted with Holbein watercolor. Sweetwater Picture Framing offers an archival fine art print of this work.

The image was composed from memory, imagination and photographic imagery, then carved out of the block. Ink is rolled over the block and printed onto paper on an etching press. It is then hand painted. Sweetwater Picture Framing offers an archival fine art print of this work

Pileated Duet

Pileated woodpeckers, with their unmistakable, Woody Woodpecker-like call, and their glorious red crests, are a common sight in North Florida. Bonded pairs stay close to each other calling back and forth while hunting for grubs and insects. I used images from Ichetucknee State Park's long leaf pine trail for the background. Each layer of the block was carved and printed on the Linoscribe Showcard press.

Swallowtail Kites

Swallowtails were hunting in a field near my home. I walked up to the fence to photograph them and they came over to me and swirled around my head. Linoleum block print with watercolor. Sweetwater Picture Framing offers an archival fine art print of this work.

The Forest Primeval

Florida's version of Bigfoot is called Skunk Ape. Legends abound all over the state, but are especially common in the Everglades with its million acres of wilderness. When I am out in the deep Florida forest with its cypress domes, hardwood hammock and pine uplands, I feel like I shed my separate, human identity and become a fellow creature with the rest of the teeming life around me. This piece was designed with atmospheric layers of tree imagery printed in layers on the press. I add a few color details and mount the piece onto a wood cradled panel 2” deep which is then clear coated with encaustic medium and then pigmented encaustic frames and enhances the piece. Multi-layered, multi block linoleum relief print.

The Swamp

Alligators are a huge part of my environment. I live near Paynes Prairie, home to thousands of gators, and see them regularly in ponds, rivers, springs, and swamps throughout Florida. I am fascinated by them and love their textural complexity. Swamps evoke mystery and timelessness, and gators are such an ancient species hearkening from the age of the dinosaurs, that I forget our “civilized” world while I'm in the swamp with it's other denizens. This piece was designed with atmospheric layers of tree imagery printed in layers on the press.

Thumbelina and the Swallowtail Kite

Thumbelina and Swallowtail is a multi-block linocut relief print mounted on a wood panel with encaustic applied. It is a southern take on Thumbelina's flight atop a swallowtail kite instead of a swallow.

Tree Hugger

Reclining oaks, pushed over by wind but still rooted, remind me of reclining Buddhas. Their generous space creates a biome of its own. I drew the tree from memory and imagination and began carving overlooking the field behind the house. The carving process takes many hours over the course of weeks, and I got to see all these inhabitants of the land. Every creature I saw I added into the piece on the spot. I had not planned to populate it so densely!
