Old Growth Giant

$1,395.00

Size with mat: 22x24

Linoleum Block Print on paper; printed on etching press with Gamblin oil-based ink and hand painted with Holbein watercolor. Edition of 35 hand pulled original prints.

Old Growth Giant was inspired by a trip to the Joyce Kilmer forest near Robbinsville North Carolina where there is a stand of old growth tulip poplars. My niece, an ecologist and botanist, is loving a cucumber magnolia in the background. It is not a specific tree, but an idealized and anthropomorphized tree created from reference and imagination. The drawing was carved out of linoleum blocks and printed on paper. On this Encaustic version the sky is left neutral and the piece is mounted on a cradle board (luan and poplar) that is gessoed 3x, then clear encaustic medium is applied with pigment around the edges to frame the piece. It is 2” deep and does not need to be framed as the encaustic wraps around the edge and it beautifully protects works on paper.
