Reduction linocut in 4 layers printed on etching press with Gamblin and Charbonel inks, Edition of 12 original hand- pulled prints.Ivory billed woodpeckers once populated the entire southern U.S. They need old growth forests with plentiful snags to feed from as they only want big, fat grubs to eat. 19th century ornithologists help wipe them out by paying locals to bring them dead birds to stuff for collectors. Sweet gum is their favorite nesting tree, so I placed my birds on this fabulous tree with the Suwannee River as a back drop. I carve what stays the white of the paper and print the first color of the edition using a registration unit to insure paper and block are in the same position for each layer. The first color is carved away(pale blue and green) and the 12 are printed with color layer #2 (light brown and deeper green), and so on until the piece is finished.
