Life on the Rim

$5,900.00

Size with mat: 32x54

Reduction linocut mounted on a 2” deep cradled wood panel, and encaustic medium and pigment applied. Edition of 11 original mounted pieces. A biologist was able to capture the first live images of a giant squid in the deep center of the Gulf of Mexico a number of years ago. Knowing there is a population of about 2000 sperm whales that calve in the western gulf, I got very excited about creating a monumental piece with these huge creatures. Oil wells are the gulf's kryptonite, so I included a well and tanker in the piece. The Charles Brand press I use is limited in size, so the piece was printed in 2 panels and dovetailed under the whale. Gessoing creates an acid free surface for the art, mounting is archival, and encaustic is an excellent preserver and protector of the art. The final process is an ink bath to accentuate the pits and texture of this medium as it is painted hot. The piece does not need to be framed.
